I had my 525iT in the shop recently for the same issue... hunting in drive on moderate grades, only seemed to happen in 'ED'.

The shop found a tech bulletin on the problem: a fail seal inside the tranny requiring removal and disassembly. The service writer said that this was just about the only repair they do on auto transmissions; ordinarily they just install a rebuild.

Anyway, service was over $1000, most of which was labor. Luckily, mine was covered under a warranty.
