The type of fluid may be stamped on the reservoir cap. In general, it is not advised to mix fluids. My 1994 530ia uses Pentosin CHF-11S, a synthetic fluid available only from BMW (@ $25 per liter!!) and should definitely not be mixed with other fluids. Yours may use ordinary ATF - what does your owner's manual say?
