HELP: Loose metal trim around front windshield (archive)

Hi All,
After driving home from work in my 95 540i, I noticed the metal trim around the front windshield had come loose at the top. The band at top center that holds the two sides together was still there. I tried to push the trim piece back into the slot but it wouldn't stay. I noticed that the little plastic tabs attached to the windshield that appear to hold the trim in place were broken. Any ideas what may have caused this and/or how to fix it?
