In Reply to: advice please '92 535iA--rebuilt trans?????? posted by sam on April 30, 2000 at 12:06:49:

: I am thinking anout buying a '92 535iA, single owner, 116K miles for 12,800 dollars. The car has been well maitained except for one issue. At 109K the transmissions was replaced with a rebuilt transmission. I am not sure if I should be concerned about this. The car seems to shift well without hesitancy. It drives well too. It also had the the auxillary fan replaced at 90K.

: My main concern is this rebuilt trans. the history record stated it had a burnt transmission. I am not really sure what that means. Also the previous owner states the car has driven fine since.

: What does anyone think? YOur answers greatly appreciated.

Hehehe Slow computer eh!!

Anyways back to he car. If it says burnt transmission it is most likely the burnt front clutch packs that the ZF's(transmission) are famious for. If it has a rubuilt transmission it is very hard to say it is good or bad. Try to find out where it was rebuilt and do some research on the mechanic. If it was done properly it will be ok for many many years. Drive the car and pay close attention to how it shifts. Also turn the ignition to "ON" and wait there for a couple of seconds. If there is a problem with the TRANS electrics it will come up with an error like "TRANS PROGRAM"
