If the transmission is the ZF 5HP18-EH (the 5 speed w/ adaptable driving), I would make sure that the transmission fluid had been changed at regular intervals (every 30K miles). These transmissions seem to be rather "delicate" and need their fluid changed regularly. They are also very finicky about any dirt that may get in them, as are most automatics.
