To add to Bill's comments, the bolts to mount the 91 covers to the wheels are different lengths than the 93 covers.

Personally, I like them without covers :)

: I can't answer all your questions, but I can shed light on some of them.

: I have these wheels on my '95 540i/6 and they have the polished lip and black five spoke center. I have 17X8's on front and 17X9's on the rear. The wheel is essentially the same for the entire run of E34 M5's, because a friend has a '91 and he recently replaced the turbine covers with the throwing star ones. They just bolt on with torx head bolts from the rear of the spokes.(BMW only supplies four bolts per wheel even though there are five spokes, don't know why.) I'm not sure of the part numbers or if there were silver spokes or painted lips, all the wheels I've seen are like mine. I originally had 17X8's all around and then found a pair of 9's for the rear.
