Thanks for your comments. We're sort of in the same boat, as I see it. I had not understood the effect of engine management systems on masking symptoms. Certainly, my car runs well for now, and will be worth some investment in repairs if and when it fails. Your point about resale value, though, is really at the core of what I think is a significant legal exposure for BMW. I think they'll manage this by taking cars in on trade at high market and fixing them at their cost, by quietly accommodating some out-of-warranty repairs, and encouraging dealer service departments to be hard-nosed with anyone who is not both knowledgeable and assertive. That will work unless and until someone brings a class action, which will bring big fees for the lawyers and discount coupons for the plaintiffs.
