Hi Grant,

I would suggest that you try and determine whether the noise is internal to the engine or external. By external I mean a loose item under the hood that may be rattling around when the RPMs go up.

If the noise is internal, there are a couple of possibilities, neither of which are pleasant. Is the knocking noise directly proportional to RPM? Do you hear it when there is a load on the engine or only when in park? Is it a light kind of knock or a heavier, rumble-like noise?

Usually, an internal knocking noise means a failed rod bearing or failed crankshaft main bearing. These require a major overhaul, best done with the engine pulled out of the car.

I sure hope I'm wrong but I would highly recommend you have a professional mechanic take a look at it as soon as possible. Failing bearings can lead to catastrophic failure if not dealt with quickly.

Let us know what you find.

Good luck,
Adnan
