: BASIC differnec is engine size...2.5 is inline 6, up to 90 produced about 168 h.p, 91 on w/M50 enogine produced 186 h.p., 535 was 3.5 liter inline w/about 210 h.p (relative hi maint also), 530 was small V8 w/about 215 h.p and 540 is the big daddy V8 w/268 h.p, chassis' all close to the same, later yrs had trim enhancements and minor changes to body work (grill/hood etc..) I hv a 525i M50 w/o VANOS but think the 530 is good balance, they are all good vehicles..
