: I recently took my car in to have the water pump replaced. After the tech finished he called and said the motor was rinning hot and the fan clutch was bad, but the fan clutch was just replaced and so was the thermostat. He said you know the fan clutch was bad if you could stop it with your hand, so he did it. (could this possibly be a safety device?) Anyway he said it will only get hot while it's idling, but I have let it idle for ten minutes without noticing any differene in temp. But I have also let it idle for thirty sec. and it almost hits red. I think the tech is pulling something on me, but could it be a faulty thermostat. It doesn't always run hot like he said it would. Grace,
Open the hood and watch the fan, when the temperature gets hot enough you will feel the air rush across the engine as the thermostat on the front of the fan causes it to kick-in, do not stick your fingers or anything else into the fan! When the temperature across your radiator isn't that hot (after slower highway driving) the fan clutch doesn't kick-in, so it will appear to just be spinning. You can definetly tell when the clutch on the fan works by the amount of air that is suddenly felt and the sound of the fan.
