I'm also getting a screeching noise from the a/c. I'm thinking it's the expansion valve making noise, but I just saw this post on the E34 digest.

From: Graham Wynne

"This one has bothered me for six months!

Some of you may remember I had been complaining of a noise
when turning sharp right and accelerating and also when
driving slowly at 1,500 to 2000 RPM (especially when moving
off gently from a standing start). I thought it was related
to the transmission and/or possibly the power steering
system but I was wrong.

Calgary BMW's service foreman has cured it with a very
simple fix. He has had several cars recently exhibiting the
same symptoms and he says there is actually a BMW service
bulletin out on it.

The problem was the hoses from the A/C compressor pressing
against the right hand strut tower under some conditions of
engine torque and thus transmitting the whirring noise from
the compressor to the body work!!! All that needed to be
done was to re-position the hoses an inch further away from
the tower and the noise went away!! These hoses are quite
stiff and this was obviously enough to cause the noise
transmission when the engine twisted a bit on the engine
mounts.

I feel much better now that I know that there is nothing
wrong with my Tranny!

If any of you develop the same problem at least you now know
how to fix it at zero cost!

Regards,

Graham Wynne"

: With the a/c on, every now and then I hear a sound that sounds like a tire screeching. It seems to come from the a/c. This is my first summer with the car, so I have nothing to compare. Anyone have any ideas what this may be? It's not loud.
