I don't think it would be a good idea to drive the car without the cluster, although it could be possible.

The job itself is fairly easy. Get the capacitors, solder and iron and circuit board cleaner aerosol, find a flat surface and an old towel to put everything on, and get into it. It will only take 1-2 hours max assuming you don't have an airbag.

A few tips... scrape any brown coating off the original solder before trying to remove old capacitors. Make sure you put the new ones in the right way. I think the -ve side points down, but confirm before extracting the old ones.

Replace all 5 capacitors, and don't over tighten the screws holding the clear perspex cover on the cluster or it will crack and look awful for evermore.

Despite being a first timer with solder, I carefully did mine about 2-3 months ago with no particular problems and it is still working perfectly.
