90' 525i CD changer won't play CD's (archive)

When I try to play perfectly good CD's I get the dreaded ERR message on the car radio's display. I have used a CD cleaining kit on it, and changed the cartridge that holds the CD's no improvement. I know the player works, because every once and a while a CD will play for a few minutes before the ERR message appears. Has anyone encountered this and how did you correct it. Please. Thanks!
