I own a '94 530iA and have driven the 535iA. Although these are automatics and you're asking about manuals, I think I can still offer some perspective on the engines. I've driven each on road and track.

The big six (3.5L) in the 535 is definitely more powerful and torquey than the small V8 (3.0L) in the 530. The V8 feels smoother, but the in-line 6 feels quite a bit more responsive. (The gearing in each was relatively similar, so difference was mostly engine.)

I've also done quite a bit of tuner mods to my 530iA - one of the things I discovered is that the compression ratio on the small V8 is so high that you can't do forced air induction (blower or turbocharger) mods. So if this might ultimately be important to you, go with the 535 rather than the 530. Check a tuner site like dinanbmw.com for more details about possible upgrades on each model. This will also give you some info on which year models may be more desirable.

I've also driven the E34 540iA. The big V8 (4.0L) is absolutely phenomenal (an understatement.) So if you're looking for big power and have the cash, go for a 540i. The manual is v. hard to find.

: I'm considering getting rid of my e32 735 for a 5 speed 535i or 530i e34. My wife has a '94 525 - love the car - would like a little more power. The 6cyl has more torque than the 530 - I know the early 8cyl engines had probs. Is a replaced 8 better than a 535 with it's proven power and reliability - is the 8 smoother - not much more hp - and less torque. Any years to watch out for on e34 535's? Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated.

: Thanks
