To all the comments about the 535's low-end prowess (with which I totally agree), I'll add one more factor for your consideration - familiarity with the M30.

As you have obviously lived with an M30 for a while, getting another in an E34 will give you an added level of comfort - especially if you work on it yourself. Look at it this way, if you are going to have the complexity of a V8 with the added cylinders and less working room, why not go for the 540?

Strength in numers is also a possible plus; there are a lot more 535s out there than 530s.

Either way, you'll get a stellar automobile.
