Reversing a battery is equivalent to discharging it. Depending on the type of charger you have, it may have built-in current limiting that will prevent excessive current.
If the battery got hot, it may have lost a lot of electrolyte (don't know what type you have, sealed or with caps). If it is possible, top off the electrolyte and try recharging it with the right polarity. If it holds a charge, you are in good shape. If not, you'll have to replace it.
More of a concern is whether you have damaged the DME electronics by subjecting it to a reverse potential. One would hope that Bosch designed in some protection. For a while, be on the lookout for strange electrical behavior.
