Greg,
sounds very similar to what happened to my RR window. Turned out to be worn out bushing on the regulator. I tried to repair the individual bushing but couldn't. I ended up having to put in a new regulator (about $55 from Vines). The hardest part of the job wash drilling out the rivets which held the regulator in the doorframe. The new regulator is held in place by 6 mm bolts with lock nuts. You will need the Bentley manual to do this job.
good luck,
Dan
