Back in 1994 I test drove both the 540iA and the 530iM. I bought the 530iM because the stick shift gave the car a more satisfying character for me. I eventually took the car to track events and really enjoyed it. I loved being in the car.

I also have a '95 525iTA which is much less powerful. And like the 540iA, the automatic seems to hide the true character of these engines. The stick shift will allow you wring out the v8 to the max. I believe the 540iA is still a tick quicker than the 530iM but the stick shift makes for a more satisfying ride. Check it out. Jim
