You won't be dissapointed with the 530iM vs the 525iM. But if you chip the 525, it'll probably be only marginally different from the unchipped 530.
The 530iM is a fraction slower than the 540iA. However, the stock 540iA tranny doesn't fully exploit the engines' capabilities. To fully wring it out, you MUST get a tranny chip ($199). The tranny chip raises the rev limit to 7000 rpms and pulls in each gear to the redline when shifter is in S4 position and you put your right foot into it. The car takes on a totally different driving character. Of course you'll also have to get the DME chip which will put you over 300 hp and 300 lbft of torque plus it flattens out the torque curve so the low end gets beefier! The 525iM and 530iM won't come close even if chipped.
Only you can decide if you'll get more practical satisfaction out of a manual vs an auto shifter. That's a totally personal thing and may vary depending on where and how you intend to drive the car.
: Okay folks,
: I test drove the 540iA and decided I could live
: with it. Now I've found a 1994, 530i 5spd (w ASC+T)
: FS 200 miles away. Anyone care to compare it to
: the 540iA for sporting character and performance?
: I'd hate to make the 5 hour round trip only to find
: that the 530i is only marginally more powerful than
: the 525i I recently test drove.
: Thanks!
