: I'm currently considering coming over to the "dark side" and getting a bimmer - I've seen a reasonably priced used 518i, but I've been unable to find many in depth reviews on the car (I believe it was only available new in Europe - but I could be wrong)
: Does anyone have any experience with this car? Things I should look out for etc. (an email copy would be nice too - but hey, beggars can't be choosers! :P)
: Your expertise is appreciated!! :)
The 518i is to be honest underpowered for this type of car - the 520/525 are a much better choice - having a straight six rather than a 4 cylinder makes a BIG difference. THe 520i is immeasurably different in response, and although does not have much low-end pull, is good at higher revs.
My mechanic advised me that the 4 cylinder is far harder to fix, and nowhere near as reliable!
Added to this the fact that the 6 cylinders are slightly more fuel efficient on the motorways, and that kinda sums it up!

PS - the post '91 (in the UK) versions of the 2.0/2.5 engines are far better in every respect.
