Hi,

If the play is truly within the steering box, nothing external will help, such as the collar nut.

Open the hood and grab the input shaft of the steering box, right before it enters the box. Turn that back and forth and watch the Pitman arm which is the output of the box. If input shaft moves and Pitman arm does not, the play is internal.

To see if you have play in the steering column, grab the input shaft and have someone rock the steering wheel. If there is play in this mode, something is loose outside the steering box. Then check the collar nut and u-joints.
