'90 520i m20 b20 engine. Did the valve adjustments today. It was a breeze and only cylinder #3 and #4 exhaust valves were out.Re adjusted to 0.010".Replaced the valve cover gasket as well as it was torn during removal. Also did the oil sump gasket replacement as it was leaking. Now this was NOT a breeze to do,more like a strong wind to a hurricane. There was a total of 25 10mm bolts securing the sump and access to 3 of the bolts was bad.The aluminium flywheel inspection cover at the end of the sump requires removal. The oil dipstick tube is removed by pulling it straight up,after undoing 1 securing nut.Not a problem. After removing all of the bolts I found out that the oil pump was in the way no matter how I tried to maneouver the oil sump out.Removed the oil pump carefully, paying due attention to the oil pump driveshaft. And that was it.Installation is the reverse. Point to note here is that the oil pump removal is required for the oil sump to be completely removed from the engine(for a good cleanup).Secondly, you WILL get tired for having to crouch under the car for long periods of time(for the home mechs who work under their cars using axle stands like I do).
