What does this tube do????? (archive)

Hi

Whilst cleaning the engine of my '91 525i I found what looks like a breather tube conected to the side of the battery compartment, just dangling down into space. It has a small plastic reservoir at the end and goes down to the bottom of the engine.

WHAT IS IT!!!!!

- and more important, where SHOULD it be conected to?????
