: With these high gas prices, I've been using regular, 87 octane, rated at US pumps, in my car. It seems to be running fine. I can't tell if it is a bit slower. Anyways, is this the proper octane to use. I know the car has anti-knock sensors, so it shouldn't knock with too low octane, just lower performance. Anyways, if someone could just tell me the real requirements for a 535i, that would be great, thanks.

Specifications call for 89 octane.

Your car does not have a knock sensor (no 535i does) and you are playing with pre-ignition fire by using 87 octane (pun intended). Don't be cheap guy, take care of that mill.
