1990 525i Sounds like diesel (archive)

At an idle especially, it sounds like a diesel. Checked the valve clearance last night. My book says .012 all measured .010 to .012. Recently bought the 525i and am just learning about them. I am not too familiar with the over head cam configuration. What else can cause this sound? Note: It has 152k miles.
