Steam Burst While Bleeding Coolant System (archive)

While letting the excess air out of the cooling system, via the thermostat housing bleeder valve, the car began to howl and a large amoumt of steam came from underneath both sides of the valve cover. What the hell did I do wrong? Did I just cause a major problem?
