Very glad you guys brought this up. Same issue with my 95 525iT. Does not seem to affect performance at all, just sounds like a diesel at low RPM.
It is NOT knocking caused by poor fuel. I always use 93 octane.

Sounds like it could be expensive if we want to "fix" it...
