You can't be sure you won't tear it.
Best methods that I know of are:
1) good quality tir rod or pitman arm puller.
Snapon makes a good one and Bav autosport
sells an inexpensive on (have only used the
Snapon one)
2) double hammer method. Use one 2 or 3lb hammer
as the anvil and hit opposite side of
female section with another 2 or 3 lb hammer.
The squeezing effect will 'squirt' the male
end of the joint out. (see an old Haynes manual
for better description).
