I'd recently investigated upgrade to steering. Mechanic at dealer says that M5 box has about 10% quicker ratio than standard E34 box. However, he strongly discouraged me from swapping because (1) it's very expensive (2) he says I won't notice much of a difference since 10% is subtle.

He advised that best bang for the buck was a new smaller diameter steering wheel which could give a 20% quicker effect to steering action - he had no particular brand in mind but said there are several after market ones like Momo, etc, to choose from.

Anyone have experience with aftermarket steering wheels?

: Does anyone know how the '91 M5 steering box is different from the '90 535i box? Is the steering ratio quicker? Is it a drop in replacement? Has anyone done this? Any suggestions?
