Help! My 1991 E34 aircon has gone crazy! It has those analogue controls of yore... Very little air gets through the vents, despite me hearing the blower run faster and faster as i move from setting 1-4. Using setting no.4 is very weak and barely sufficient not to mention estremely noisy (am i wasting fuel by running it on "4"?) This is not a sudden problem, just gradually set in over the years

the last time something blew (1994) it cost my dad something to the tune of US$4k so it would be good to know what might be wrong rather than get conned into replacing the whole works. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

PS: i tried fiddling with those sliding controls which let you choose where u want the air to blow out from but little air comes out no matter which setting i use.
