It sound like a clogged up evaporator (cooling coil) to me.The air that is being blown by the blower seems to be unable to pass thru the evaporator. As you said that this happens gradually, dirt could have accumulated over the years and really gunked up the fins so bad that air could barely pass thru.If that is the problem, the evaporator needs to be removed and cleaned and who knows what else could be found(or created) by the mechanic along the way..Mucho $$$$!

: Help! My 1991 E34 aircon has gone crazy! It has those analogue controls of yore... Very little air gets through the vents, despite me hearing the blower run faster and faster as i move from setting 1-4. Using setting no.4 is very weak and barely sufficient not to mention estremely noisy (am i wasting fuel by running it on "4"?) This is not a sudden problem, just gradually set in over the years

: the last time something blew (1994) it cost my dad something to the tune of US$4k so it would be good to know what might be wrong rather than get conned into replacing the whole works. Any pointers would be much appreciated.
: Cheers

: PS: i tried fiddling with those sliding controls which let you choose where u want the air to blow out from but little air comes out no matter which setting i use.
