Get the fluid up to operating temp, have car on level surface, put in neutral with engine running. When I removed the fill plug ATF came out, about 1/2 pint. Did I do this right? Was there to much ATF in the transmission to begin with. Can excess ATF harm the transmission. Thanks for the help.

Answers to your questions yes, yes , and no. 1/2 pint isn't much, and your level may be slightly different from last service.
