The driving personality of the 525i M50 Manual vs Auto is very different in the lower gears.
The auto makes the car a very nice sedate tourer but the manual gives it a little more 'edge' for want of a better word.

Generally, you can wring more performance out of a small displacement engine using manual rather than auto transmissions. Just to compare, I have driven both but I always wanted the 5 speed version of the E34 and waited until I found one. Then again, that's me....
