Power steering filter on '92 525ia (archive)

I took my car to a mechannic to have the a/c system diagnosed. He presented me with a list of things that he felt needed attention. One of them was dirty power steering fluid, with the recommendation of changing the filter. I bought a filter and I am now wondering what to do with it. I have the bently manual, but it is never mentioned. Does the entire brown reservoir need to be replaced, or can I open it somehow to get at the filter. I would appreciate help from anyone with a procedure on this.
