: I am an owner of an 89 535i with over 260,000 miles on it and still running. We are looking to replace our aging 528e, which has over 250,000 miles, with either another 535i or a 525i (w/ M50 engine).

: I know the longevity and bullet-proof characteristics of the M30 engine (also had a 1602 and a 2002 which granted phenominal mileage). How does the M50 compare? Is it as long-lived? Any particular problems with it? Any input would be greatly appreciated, especially from personal experience.

: Thanks loads,
: Ron

Have two, M50 and M50tu, M50tu has 177K miles, no sign of power change or oil use between changes, lowest I've seem after about 5000 miles is about 1/2 quart. I do regular maintenance by the inspection indicator, nothing extra, just by the book. No one has been in the engine, it has been hot once(broken radiator) at about 90K, with no apparent ill effect. The tu (vanos) I find to be much smoother then the non-vanos and slightly stronger. I got 285K miles out of a M30, 6 series, last I heard its still going. M30 more power then M50tu.
