: : 1. When you bought your BMW, what were your expectations of its reliability? Am I being naive in expecting the "best car BMW has built" to be extremely reliable?

Here's a disenting option from a very happy
540i owner.

I work in the auto industry. Inside figures
indicate that Toyota/Honda are much more reliable
(initially and after 5 years in service) than
domestic and German imports. This agrees with my
personal experience (Toyota and Lexus).
Furthermore, maintenance on the Toyotas has been
less than 1/3 the cost of that required by the
540i. At 66kmiles, the 540i has needed a number of
fixes (electrical gremlins, oil pan gasket,
valve cover gaskets, ...). The Japanese products
have been literally perfect in everyway (the Lexus
has 136k miles and the Toyota will hit 80k soon).

Of course, the BMW is an order of magnitude more
satisfying to drive and it does feel more solid
that the Lexus felt (even when new).

If you care about cost per mile driven, buy a
Toyota or Honda product. If you are willing to
pay for driving enjoyment, buy a BMW.
