I bought my 1991 520iA with 77k miles specifically for reliability and I have not been disappointed. My wife has been driving BMW's for years and I suddendly realised all I ever did was wash her car but got greasy on whatever I was driving.

I drive 2k miles a month mainly motorway and since buying the car in December 1999 I have covered 14k miles and spent the equivalent of maybe one weekend on repairs.

Prior to that I spent five years most weekends under the hood of other cars fixing things. My wife can't believe the additional free time I now have (in fact I think she might prefer I was in the garage for some of the weekend!!).

As an example I don't miss sundry minor oil leaks. One of the bays in my garage has had a BMW in it for over 4 years (E36 and E34) and the floor is spotless. The other side has multiple oil stain patches from Fords, Nissans, Rovers etc etc.

OK, I have a rear window which is slow, have blown a bulb in a window switch and I still have to do regular maintenance but this car leaves me more free weekend time than I have been used to for some years.

Of course my wife now has me decorating the house!!
