90 525i 152k Sounds like a diesel at idle. noise lowers off idle but maybe still audible, definetly less noticable, then comes back at idle. Valve clearance is at spec. radial clearance of the rocker arms are within tolerances(after a questionable check with dial indicator). I listend to the engine with the valve cover off and am now almost certain it is not rocker arms, rocker arm shafts, or anything on the top of the head. With the valve cover off it sounds like it is coming from directly under the intake. Maybe around the injectors. Any sound is hard to describe but I can say that it sounds very much like a diesel at idle. Three people have asked me if it was a diesel. Runs fine. I have only had it 6 weeks have several times rev'd to 5k rpm, if it was rod bearing or piston pin or anything in the bottom end wouldn't it have let go by now and knocked a hole through the block or something? Also when the engine is under load, like any acceleration, either hard or mild, the sound seems to disappear, not that it gets drowned out, it clearly just gets quiet. I may record this sound and convert to a wav file if it sounds accurate enough, then email it to anyone interested. ?Thanks for any input at all.
