This is a fairly common problem with your speed sensor in the rear differential. Either it's really dirty, going bad, or has a bad connection.

Any-one had a problem with the speedo on 1988 535i?
Usually only happens at highway speeds - speedo and odometer simply stop working for, generally, only a short time, then, for no apparrent reason, function normally. Problem does not appear to be related to bumps, it even stopped today after re-starting after stopping at a roadside store.
Bloody frustating, as it also renders the trip computer readings pretty useless.

Any suggestions?
