Aux Water Pump? (archive)

I was told that I need to replace the aux water pump on my '89 because the "solenoids are bad." The dealer told me that I won't be able to get any heat until then, but that just isn't the case.

What is the purpose of the auxillary water pump? Do I have to replace it? Will I get heat during the winter? And does the the fact that it is not hooked up now explain the slight increase in running temperature?
