If power is your concern,get a 535i with manual trans.Handling on the e34 can be improved with lowered springs&harder shocks combo,bigger anti roll bars,strut brace etc.
If you can affored it,keep the e28 for thrashin' and the buy the e34 for cruisin'.

Please help. I currently own an '88 535i automatic. I like it very much due to the performance add-ons, however the body is not in the best shape, and I am constantly "working" on it. I just can't seem to ever get the car "perfect". I am finally looking for an alternate daily driver.
I can get a really good deal on a low mileage '90 525i, but I'm very concerned about the loss of performance and handling of my E28. Less power and more weight kinda sucks! Should I buy it and add a supercharger and tighten the suspension?
I need some imput from someone who has experienced a similar situation. Thanks in advance.
