Changing drive belt on E34 (I'm in a real jam) (archive)

Having replaced the belt on my old E30 I tore headlong into my 90 525i today to change the drive belt and ran into a major snag. I was doing fine until I got to geting the crank. Do you have to remove the crank pulley to slip off the belt?

Now I'm afraid in my struggles the crank has even moved a little. Is there an alignment mark on the crank pulley to use? I can't believe what a mess I made of this. Thank you
