Don't be so quick to bury the 525 so quickly. My son recently purchased an 85 535ia in very mearly perfect condition. We met by accident on the onramp early one morning and well, you know, father/son, e28/e34, 525ia/535ia. The results surprised us both. His 535 took me (just barely) up to around 80 mph, I caught up quickly and then at around 110 mph I began pulling away. The 525 gives away just 14 hp but gives away bunches of torque. You can bring the hp even to and the torque close to the 535 (e28) by chipping.

The e34 is so much more aerodynamically cleaner and the chassis is much stiffer and the cabin is soooooo quiet at speed. The early 525 e34's do use timing belts that (MUST) be changed at the proper intervals. The only real difference you would notice with a chipped 525i with a 5 speed
would be better handling, smoother idle, quieter ride, more refinement, larger trunk, more comfortable cabin, stiffer chassis, and an equally classic styling.
If you could hold off for a 535i, I believe you would be most satisfied indeed.

The e34 is a great car. I still like the e28 but I really am sold on the e34. I grin from ear to ear just anticipating the opportunity to drive the e34.

Hang on to the e28 and enjoy it.

Good luck
Michael
