I can't answer most of the questions you posed in this e-mail, but I did want to comment on the extended warranty. I bought a '95 525i with the extended 2-year, 100,000 mile warranty. However, I quickly discovered that the 2-year warranty did NOT begin the day I bought the car, but rather began the day that the 4-year warranty expired. So, in fact, it was a 6 year warranty from the initial in-service date. I checked and double-checked with the dealership because the salesman thought the 2-year warranty began the day I purchased it; nevertheless, the pre-certified paperwork from BMW verified that it began the day the 4-year warranty ran out, which at that time cut an additional 6 months off my warranty. I don't know if this will be the case with you, but it would be worth your while to check it out thoroughly.
I have had to do 2 repairs to the car since I bought it: 1) replace the master switch for the A/C (several hundred $) and 2) replace a pulley for the A/C (or it may have been for the alternator--I can't remember). The master switch was covered under the warranty and I paid only the deductible. The pulley was not covered because they said it was an item that wears out with normal use.
Hope this helps. Good luck,
Hunter
