Having learned how to drive in a Volvo 240 5spd wagon and then switched to a 535i 5spd after college, I would recommend a Volvo wagon as a first car(especially for high school/college).
Look at it objectively.
1. You can carry more friends in a Volvo. 8+ vs 5
2. You can carry more kegs in a Volvo.
3. Volvo parts are cheaper.
4. If you put the back seat down in a Volvo, it is partically a double bed back there(speaking from experience).
5. Volvo have better off-road capability, similiar to an Outback minus 4 wheel drive.
6. After driving a Volvo for a couple years, your driving becomes very smooth.
7. The BMW looks better and will get you more girls, but that back seat is a little cramped.
8. I've had more near death experiences in my bimmer than my volvo.
Either way make sure you take some performance driving schools. I've seen too many kids who think they are good drivers just because they have a fast car.

Isn't the E34 a bit safer than some valvo's though? However, something like a 3 might be a better car for learning to drive as it would be less intimidating. The performance of a 525i with the M20 engine is low enough to keep people out of trouble. I would recommend getting the manual, as the automatic is even more of a slug.
I also think that everyone should be proficient at car control, and should either be taught by family/friends, or go take a car control school. I know that here in atlanta, there is a school (run by panoz www.panozracingschool.com) that teaches teen driving schools and advanced handling schools as well as racing schools.
I would highly recommend finding something similar near you and learn at least the basics.
