I learned to drive in 1996 on my father's 1985 Volvo 240 that he used to use for his 80 mile/day commute. I was 15 with a permit. Right before I turned 16, my grandmother died. She left everything to my father, but an addition to her will six months previously directed the executor to give me her car. She owned a 1993 BMW 525i. It was just three years old and had 20,000 miles.

So I named the car "Fredda-Mae" after Grandma. Fredda-Mae has served me quite well since. The car is still driven by my mother. It has no dings whatsoever. I now drive a 1998 328is. My father fell in love with BMW's after driving the 328, and bought a 1995 M3 with an auto. Now that's a CAR!

My mom has now ordered a new 325ci at the dealer. The salesman (who also sold us the 328 and M3) asked my mother, "Would you be interested in selling the 525i?" She said "NO WAY!"

All in all, an 89 or 90 525i might be a good choice. They are ten years old, and seem to be safe for a ten year old car. I would try to get a 1990 for the air bag. Also, consider a 1993-1995 Volvo 850, dpending on your budget.

Matt
