a few weeks ago I started to get the error message LIC PLATE LIGHT whenever I put the car in reverse. I checked the plate lights and they worked, but were on all the time and the lights on the trunk lid flickerd on and off as the trunk lid moved, also the reverse lights did not come on. After checking the wiring in the trunk, as well as the bulbs I could not find a solution to the problem. I brought the car to the dealer and it turns out that the marker lights had been causing a short in the electrical system. The plastic border had cracked, a bulb had cracked and the connections were corroded causing "backfeed" into the system. So after replacing all 4 marker lights the problem has dissapeared.

I had precisely the same symptoms in my '91 535i 5spd. Diagnosis: wiring short due to fatigued and fractured wiring harness in the boot/trunk. Fix: new wire spliced in at dealer.

Problem solved.

Paul
