What is the difference between the M20 and M50 engines? Does anyone know what the M and the 20 & 50 designate, signify or stand for? Thanks in advance.

M20 is timing belt driven single cam engine, with single coil, of an earlier design than M50. M50 is a chain driven double cam design, with individual coils, both are 6 cylinder. M & S are BMW designators for engines, as E is for chassis, the numbers are sequensial, larger is later design not nessacerily released in that order.
