My car is a 94 540i automatic. I average 19.3 in mixed driving. On highway trips I usually get 22-24 MPG. My lowest MPG for a full tank of gas was 17 MPG.

My car is lowered with Eibach springs and Boge Turbo Gas shocks. It has 17" wheels and tires. The ride is firm, but well damped. I do not find it harsh at all, except over the most extreme of bad roads.

The stock suspension provides a good balance of sporting and luxury characteristics. Most people, I believe, lower their E34s to improve the looks. The firmer ride and better handling is nice too.
