I recently bought an 89 525i,Cheep, and wonder if my air conditioning works properly. Background information is the air did not work when I bough it. Since the purchase I added about 3 lbs of freon in the middle of May. The system was working fine in 80 F, but I was concerned about why it was so low on R-12. I took it back 3 days later to check for leeks and it passed. The temperature in Fort Worth Texas has been over 100 F and my air takes forever to cool. Is this normal? It will pull the temperature down eventually when driving on the highway but takes too long in my opinion. I use to have a 1980 320i and they had the worse air conditioners. I was under the impression that they had corrected the problem in these cars. I would have paid more attention to this put I had to fix the water pump, cracked head, and leaking radiator. I thought fixing the cooling problem would change things. I checked the servomotors on the air ducts and they appear to work. I looked at the sight glass on the air conditioner and I could see streaks of air passing by. No foaming just something flowing across it. Do I need more freon? The electric fan works and the fan clutch. How complicated does this system get? I don’t have the climate control system, just the plane one. I also can’t figure out where the air is drawn from when I set it to re-circulation. Does it draw it from behind the dash or is it supposed to be re-circulated from one of the vents? None of my vents seem to re-circulate the air when I turn that function on. I read in Bentley manual that it has temperature sensors in the evaporator, heater core, and cabinet. Could a bad one miss the system up? Or would I be able to manually override this by setting the temperature control all the way over until it clicks. I also notice that the fan speed shoots up and slows down. I am assuming this is just a bad control knob but wonder if the integrated climate control unit could mess things up too. Basically could anyone tell me a good way to narrow things down?
